MEtamorphoses

This modern adaptation of Ovid’s classic poem by the same name, written by Mary Zimmerman, tells classic myths by way of elegant vignettes Choreographed by Caribay Franke. The stories of Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, narcissus and others are told by way of water themed movement and the incorporation of arial Silks.

I took a new approach to this set by forgoing the use of any hard materials whatsoever and instead decorated the entire space with various white fabrics which were then interacted with in creative ways throughout the scenes. Using lightweight fabric we could mimmic the movement of water or softness of bedding. To signify tension we tested the limits of certain stretch fabrics and used shadow play to add a mysterious air to some moments. The use of arial silks gave a weightlessness to the movement of many of the characters which was supported by a set clad in the heavenly symbolism of white fabric. The paint treatment also served to support the theme of dark water which symbolically tied each of the short stories together.
